Wow! Got my ass kicked on a live webinar tonight… Very humble moment. Normally I would do a live ranking on Google and take the front page like it was nothing.  The search term “SEO Bakersfield” or “SEO in Bakersfield“, this was child’s play. I had already looked at the competition, there was none, didn’t exist.SEO Mistakes - Suck!

So what was the real problem? Well after being very humble, I went back and looked at the page. And son of a bitch! When I copied and pasted, I accidentally copied the old links from my last webinar.

So here’s what I mean

My last webinar was about taking the front page for “SEO Lubbock” and “SEO in Lubbock” Which I did in about 10 minutes and by the next day I was sitting at #2 or #3.  So I just copied the template I had been using each time to take these markets. Just before I copied the template I had been using, I didn’t change the text links.

You see the keywords that I had used “SEO Bakersfield” and “SEO in Bakersfield” were accidentally linked to the pages for “SEO Lubbock” and of course “SEO in Lubbock”. Had I just taken a couple of extra minutes and looked over my work, I would have so noticed this right away.

Now the SEO Mistakes!

I didn’t check it before I published it. This ultimately lead to my “SEO Mistakes”. Which ultimately lead to my work not ranking immediately like it should have! Like I said if I had taken more time to prepare and check my work, I would have ranked just like usual.

I little off subject here. I remember this one time when I was remodeling my bathroom and I wanted a bigger bathroom. Well I was in a hurry, my twin boys were about to be born, I had to finish this project. Well to enlarge my bathroom, I had to reroute my water pipes for my pool. Wow what a mistake! When I rerouted the pipes, I placed a elbow just under where the new shower was going. Needless to say, I didn’t check, I just buried it and didn’t think about it ever leaking. About a week later, I notice my pool was getting very low. You see I already buried the pipes and installed the shower. Ultimately I had to rip out the shower, break the concrete and start all over. I fixed it, but what a pain in the ass. If I would have taken just a few more moments to look for the mistakes…

Fixing my SEO Mistakes

Well at least when you make an SEO mistake, you don’t have to do so much work. So in this case, I am deleting the original post I did on the webinar for “SEO Bakersfield“. Doing it correctly.

Learn from my mistakes if you can. Check your work, before you go in front of a hundred people and say “look at me, what a great SEO I am”. The fact is this could have been avoided. I am sure this won’t be the last SEO mistake I will ever make, but this could have been avoided with a little care and a little caution.

They bold the text and increase the font size. “H Tags” generally start as H1, H2, H3, H4, H5 and H6. Although I was able to fit them into my content just like you’re seeing now. The focus wasn’t so much on “SEM Bakersfield” and “Search Engine Marketing Bakersfield” as it was on “SEO Bakersfield” and “Search Engine Optimization Bakersfield”.


I wrote this post to help local Businesses in Bakersfield rank in the search engines. A lot of times local businesses are struggling to rank in the search engines and can’t afford to hire an SEO Company to do the work for them. So this becomes my way of giving back to the communities that I do work in. With just a little proper onsite optimization most local businesses can rank for their local products and local services. This is mainly due to the fact that there is little competition in the local markets when it comes to Search Engine Optimizing. If you in a competitive market, you will need a lot more than onsite optimization. Although onsite optimization is the beginning to getting your local business found on the internet.

What The New ICANN Domain Names Mean For Google Rankings & SEO: Nothing

ICANN – the organization in charge of internet domain names – has approved plans that may create hundreds or thousands of new “top level domain names.” I’ve seen some reports Icann Domain Namesalready that this will help with search engine optimization. It won’t. It’ll just enrich some new TLD owners at the expense of brands who will now spend even more to fight cybersquatting.
The New Domain Names Are Coming
ICANN is the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names And Numbers, and it oversees the world’s domain name system. In its wisdom, it decided yesterday that the 22 generic top level domain (gTLD) names we have at the moment — things like .com, .org and .net — aren’t enough. More are needed.
ICANN doesn’t have anything up in its news section or its blog on this yet, but within its press room area, there’s a news release (PDF format) with more details, which in turn leads to a helpful fact sheet (also PDF).
Winners & Losers
For $185,000, businesses or organizations can apply for to run their own gTLD. If Apple, Google or Facebook wanted to have .apple, .google and .facebook names, that now becomes possible. That could be pretty cool for companies that want to have domain names that fully reflect their own brands.
Of course, not everyone will necessarily be granted a top level domain name. Who gets lucky depends on what ICANN decides. Smaller brands — which are brands nonetheless — won’t be able to afford the names. Who gets to have hot generic names like .money or .tickets will be decided, to my understanding, solely by ICANN.
What happens when two companies with the same trademark both decide they want the same top level domain remains to be seen. Who gets to be .giants — the San Francisco Giants baseball team or the New York Giants football team. Maybe they could play each other. And those are the only organizations out there with a claim to the Giants name, right?
Domain Names & SEO
In terms of search engines and SEO, so far, I haven’t seen ICANN itself say anything directly about how the new names might be helpful. But my experience in watching the release of longer 63-character domain names back in in 1999, as well as the release new names in the 2000s such as .biz and .mobi, tells me that others will soon be making all types of SEO claims about the new names.
Bottom line — the new names will almost certainly mean nothing special to search engines. They won’t have any super ranking powers. If you managed to get .money, that doesn’t mean you’ll rank tops for money-related terms any more than people with the existing .travel domains do well for travel — because they don’t.
Go do a search for “travel” now or any popular travel-related term on Google. Count the number of times you see sites coming up with .travel in their domain name. You won’t need more than one hand. You probably one need more than one finger. You probably won’t need any fingers at all.
Search engines like Google and Bing give no particular credit or boost to generic top level domain names in general. They don’t say, “Hmm, .com — that’s more important than .net, give it a boost.” They don’t say “Hmm, .travel, boost any site with that over other travel sites.”
Search engines do use country-specific domain names, when these can be trusted, as a signal for making content tailed to a particular country. Many UK web sites use the .uk domain. It’s a trust worthy signal.
In contrast, many non-Libyan or non-Tuvalu businesses make use of the .ly and .tv domain names intended for those countries. As a result, those are a less-trustworthy signal of whether a site is from those countries. That’s why other signals such as links have to be used.
So the new domain names? Sites will do well with them not because they have a tasty top level domain like “.travel” but because particular sites might get enough links and other signals pointing at them to do well.
In the end, the domain names do present new opportunities for some businesses. A few companies are going to get very rich off of this. Some are going to wonder if they need to buy their names again with all these new spaces to avoid cybersquatting.
But from an SEO perspective, be calm. Having a new name won’t rocket you to success; not having one doesn’t doom to you never being found.

I know what a negative title “Johnny Rockets – Bad Service – Universal City Walk“. The truth is I shouldn’t really be writing about my experience. I should just be a Johnny Rockets Receiptgood quite citizen and say forget about it. But I can’t! People really don’t understand the power of the internet. I have a voice, you have a voice and today I want to tell my story about Johnny Rockets and my bad service that I received at the Universal City Walk location.

Now before you start reading my story about Johnny Rockets at Universal City Walk and my  Bad Service, I do want you to know this is not the normal and not all locations offer bad service. I have eaten at the Johnny Rockets in Valencia, CA in Town Center and receive absolutely great service, especially from a waitress by the name of Mandy. She’s supper cool and my Boys really like her. I have also had lunch at the Johnny Rockets in Encino and receive relatively decent service, sad part is I really don’t remember that one all that well, except for the poor parking. Darn it, there I go all negative again. Did this one experience put a bad taste in my mouth for Johnny Rockets? I hope not…

OK, my story “Johnny Rockets – Bad Service – Universal City Walk”

I was trying to figure out what to do. It was Fathers Day and I wanted to go out and do something special with my Boys. So I asked my Boys… “Where do you want to go?” Both said Disney, no I don’t want to drive that far, besides it’s Fathers Day and I just want to take it easy. So again “Where do you want to go?” and one of them pops off with Hollywood, that’s what he calls Universal City Walk. Ok, this sounds good. But we need to eat and the next question “Where do you want to eat In and Out Burger or Johnny Rockets?” one pops off with “In And Out Burger” and the other pops off with Johnny Rockets. Now I have to cast the remaining vote. And as you know, I chose Johnny Rockets, bad choice!

We got the Plan!

This is perfect, Johnny Rockets for a late lunch, then Universal Studios and top it off with a movie at AMC Universal City Walk. They have been wanting to see Green Lantern.

Now Johnny Rockets!

So it starts out just like any other trip to Johnny Rockets. We have a little routine. First we eat at Johnny Rockets and then a movie at AMC Universal City Walk. Although today were going add Universal Studios to the mix. Sounds fun, right?

Ok back to Johnny Rockets, this is what we’re talking about.  Well we enter Johnny Rockets and it’s pretty dead, especially for a Sunday afternoon. But oddly enough we find ourselves waiting for about 5 minutes or less. The hostess is about to seat us at a table, but I ask for a booth. She wasn’t really happy about this, so I pointed out a booth, a bunch of booths as a matter of fact. She explains she has to check to see if there available. Fine we will wait again, no big deal.  So we get seated, the Boys immediately ask the waitress for some crayons and some paper to color. But she says they don’t have any. The sad part is I think they did because on the way out, I saw some. Really sad!

Time to Order!

Now remember it’s not a busy day. But here we are waiting to order. Waiting, waiting, waiting, yea time to order. Christine our waitress comes to take our order. She seemsJohnny Rockets Empty Place and Bad service nice at first sight. Well were ready to order, shoot we have been waiting for at least 10 minutes, we know what we want. So I order a bowl of chili, two egg salad sandwiches with no lettuce, just mayonnaise on both sides and fries, oh and don’t forget toasted for me and my one sons. For my other son, he’s easy, kids hot dog meal. For drinks we order three Root Beers. I also mention to bring the chili before the food…

Jonny Rockets and the bad service starts!

Well our drinks come! I guess you can’t screw up three Root Beers. So were waiting, don’t really remember how long, me and the boys were messing around and time was kind of moving along. I had enough time to record a video of one of my sons goofing around and post it to FaceBook.

The Food Arrives…

Here comes the food. Our waitress didn’t bring it, she kind of disappeared, the manager Jose brings our food. I immediately see the egg salad sandwiches have lettuce on them and the bread is not toasted. So I had them back and tell Jose how they were supposed to be made. WOW! You would have thought I totally insulted this guy by asking him to bring the food the right way. What a JERK! And it got worse… They bring my other sons kids hot dog plate, cool everything’s right on this one. But… No napkins, no silverware, no nothing… So I try to get their attention, nope… Next I get up to find some, my 7 year old son had already made a mess. Imagine that…  Bam there’s Jose again, looking like a bully. “What do you need” in a rude voice! I said, I need some place settings anJohnny Rockets Manager Jose - The Jerk!d napkins. “Oh, I was about to bring those”. Whatever, total liar. He wasn’t about to bring anything.

Here comes the egg salad sandwiches and I noticed not fries. When he originally brought the wrong food there were fries. Where did the fries go? I was about to ask and Jose immediately walked off rudely to go hang out behind the counter.

Nobody comes back…

Yep, nobody comes back. The boys needed refills on their drinks. I was wondering what ever happened to those fries. Oh what about that chili too? Man you would have thought these people were serving food at “Mels Rude Diner” or something. Well Christine finally comes back and brings the boys refills, but no refill for me. So I whipped out my iphone and beganJohnny Rockets My Empty Glass taking pictures. As I was taking a picture of my empty glass, our waitress runs over and asks do you need a refill? Yep sure do. Still no fries, still no chili. So ask here, where’s the chili and fries? She looks at me with a dumb look and I told her, don’t worry, we really didn’t want our fries or chili, it was just something I ordered. Yes I was being a smart ass by now.

I would like the Managers name and number…

So wanted the Managers name and number and I asked for it. Christine walked off, I thought she was going to bring back Jose or something, nope he never showed up. I waited for about 3 to 5 minutes and finally she brings me this card. She hands me the card and begins to walk away. As the smart ass that I am, I told her as she was walking away “make sure you search Google in the morning for Johnny Rockets Bad Service, Universal City Walk”. WOW, what a look I got! And then she says I would like to know what was  wrong. Whatever you knew what was wrong, your manager knew what was wrong and you did nothing about it, you didn’t care until I told you to search Google tomorrow for “Johnny Rockets Bad Service”.

Whether its Johnny Rockets or any other place that offers a service, you need to be careful! We live in a new world where before we were silent, now each of us have access to the world and can tell our stories.

Johnny Rockets at Universal City Walk, you need to clean up your act and treat people like customers!

My Review Of: “Search Engine Optimization worth the investment”

Well let me start with saying DUH! Not duh to the article it’s self. Duh to anybody who is not starting with basic SEO – Search Engine Optimization. Optimizing your site is just the beginning to having a successful brand online. Years ago business owners used websites as a online business card or some sort. That is so not the case anymore. Myself as a local SEO, understand the power of Search Engine Optimization. Most may or may not know this but, Nine Eye Interactive Media does not have a advertising budget! That’s right zero advertising budget. Our clients find us online just like they want to be found online. With a little Search Engine Optimization, you can go a long way. I write about SEO tips and how to get listed on Google Maps from time to time and if businesses or the people behind the business would just follow these simple steps, they would see a huge change in their website presence on the internet in just a short amount of time.

Part of this article that I really love – “The Excuses” – I believe Dana did a really good job at pointing out all the excuses people use as to why they don’t optimize their website.

The two I love the most:

  • “My Web designer said they did that ‘search engine stuff.’ ”
  • “My Web designer didn’t say anything about it.”

Web Designers don’t know crap about SEO, well maybe I should say Most Web Designers don’t know crap about SEO! Web Designers make pretty websites, they make websites function. But we all know Google does not care about pretty websites. Remember Spider Bots are blind, they can’t see how good your site looks. They can only read what is on your site only if you made it possible to read!

Search Engine Optimization worth the investment

Which is smarter — investing your ad budget where someone “might” look or investing it where they “do” look?

Which is easier? Trying to divert someone’s attention to your business when they’re focused elsewhere or grabbing their attention when they’re looking for what you do?

Which is cheaper? Spending $1,000 to get 1,000 visitors to your site right now or spending $1,000 to get 500 visitors per month to your site for the next six months?

All else being equal, the smarter, easier, cheaper solution to getting prospects to your website is search engine optimization, or SEO. Why? Because the best time to be found is when someone is looking, and the place they look is on the first page of Google.

So why haven’t you hired an SEO expert? Here are some of the objections I encounter when discussing SEO with prospects, and my answers.

“I don’t understand SEO.”

I don’t understand taxes. Or why my washing machine makes funny noises. That’s why I go to an expert I trust.

“My Web designer said they did that ‘search engine stuff.’ ”

If your Web design company understands how search engines work, then yes, your “onsite” optimization is probably just fine.

But that’s usually not enough; external factors such as how many other sites link to yours play an even bigger role. Most Web design companies don’t do that type of SEO work.

“My Web designer didn’t say anything about it.”

They probably hoped you wouldn’t ask.

“I just assumed my site would pop right up; that’s why I had it built!”

Most Web designers are just that — designers — not search engine experts. They do what they’re good at, which is building you an attractive, organized site that provides information about your company.

Getting that site to rank in Google is not part of the job description. Much SEO work is done after a site is finished, by a separate company or expert.

“I’d rather stick with what I’m doing now.”

If it’s working well for you, congratulations! But you’re not interested in more business? Just last month, there were 720 searches in Google for some variation of “chiropractor” in Columbia, 320 searches for roofing, 18,100 for apartments, 4,400 for real estate and 390 for plumber. You don’t want to reach those prospects?

 

“My site is ugly/outdated. No sense doing it now.”

Start your SEO while your site is being redesigned. By the time it ranks well, the new version will be live.

“It’s too expensive.”

Only if the profit is less than the cost, right? If you could spend $1,000 to get a client worth $4,000, would you do it?

Also — let’s compare SEO costs to costs such as Adwords, Google’s pay-per-click program. SEO costs vary, but let’s say you’re a chiropractor, and you’ve budgeted $500 per month for six months to get your site ranking higher. That’s $3,000 total.

Google’s estimated average cost-per-click for “chiropractor Columbia MO” is $4.38. That means every time someone clicks on your ad, you’re charged that much money. If 720 people click on your ad, that’s $3,153.60 for one month — or $18,921.60 total for six.

And although SEO should be seen as a continuing expense, results usually last a long time. The initial push to get the site to rank is usually the longest, most expensive part; it’s easier to keep a site ranking high than get it there.

“SEO takes too long. I need customers now.”

Yes, getting your site to the top might take some time. But there are ways to speed up the SEO process, and I might be able to get your Google Places listing on Page 1 within a week. And if you don’t get started, you’ll never get there.

“I don’t know who to trust.”

You might have heard stories of “black-hat” tactics that get your site banned from Google. Look for proof of expertise, ask for references, and if you don’t know SEO, make sure you have a friend on the Web who does.

“I tried SEO. It didn’t work.”

Maybe you hired an SEO company before and were unimpressed by the results. It’s hard to say why; perhaps the company didn’t know what they were doing.

Maybe you didn’t run your campaign long enough; the sites you need to beat might be pretty firmly entrenched.

If your site is new, it takes time, work and a smart strategy to outrank an older site with lots of pages and backlinks.

Your SEO person has no way of predicting, either, what Google will do, your competitors will do or even what you will do. I’ve had clients make website changes that mess up what I’m tracking. One even deleted a page I was building links to.

Your website cannot generate a profit for your business if your prospects aren’t finding it. Assuming you have a good offer, getting a prospect to your site is one of the best investments you can make in the growth of your business.

Shift your marketing budget around a bit if you need to, but make SEO a priority. What are you waiting for?

Well let me start with saying DUH! Not duh to the article it’s self. Duh to anybody who is not starting with basic SEO – Search Engine Optimization. Optimizing your site is just the beginning to having a successful brand online. Years ago business owners used websites as a online business card or some sort. That is so not the case anymore. Myself as a local SEO, understand the power of Search Engine Optimization. Most may or may not know this but, Nine Eye Interactive Media does not have a advertising budget! That’s right zero advertising budget. Our clients find us online just like they want to be found online. With a little Search Engine Optimization, you can go a long way. I write about SEO tips and how to get listed on Google Maps from time to time and if businesses or the people behind the business would just follow these simple steps, they would see a huge change in their website presence on the internet in just a short amount of time.

Part of this article that I really love – “The Excuses” – I believe Dana did a really good job at pointing out all the excuses people use as to why they don’t optimize their website.

The two I love the most:

  • “My Web designer said they did that ‘search engine stuff.’ ”
  • “My Web designer didn’t say anything about it.”

Web Designers don’t know crap about SEO, well maybe I should say Most Web Designers don’t know crap about SEO! Web Designers make pretty websites, they make websites function. But we all know Google does not care about pretty websites. Remember Spider Bots are blind, they can’t see how good your site looks. They can only read what is on your site only if you made it possible to read!

I really enjoyed this article by Diana Ratliff, well written and hit the point.

How negative, right! Interior Designers Montrose – Fail from the beginning! But as we all know negative headlines sale.

I’m sitting here at Starbucks intrigued, distracted and fascinated by all the people who just don’t get it!

Anyway that’s so not what I wanted to talk about. I wanted to talk about the two young ladies putting together a new interior design company. Honestly I shouldn’t even be sitting here writing this. I could be working on ten other projects and just finishing one, right. But the geeky side of me has over taken me, once again! The poor girls are putting together a new company on a shoe string budget. One said hey “let’s give away $5 dollar gift cards to Starbucks” and then “stated that could get expensive“. Yea you got that right, because the money you would have to pay just to give away a $5 gift card by driving traffic to your website that nobody will ever find! Cruel I know.

Yes I have to go back to the negative headline! Because it’s all true.

Here’s what you should really be doing:

1.       Website - that is optimized for your market – “Interior Designers Montrose” but as I should you, nobody is looking for “Interior Designers Montrose”, your real market is any other place than Montrose, maybe like Los Angeles or Santa Monica.

 

2.       Facebook - creating and a Facebook fan following – yes nice – your friends and family are going to be your best 1st customers, yea I know cheesy, but something has to pay the bills.

 

3.       Twitter – While Twitter can difficult to create a real following that will pay off, it’s a good start.

 

4.       Free download – Maybe a PDF, you know ebook – “7 Deadly ways an Interior Designer can destroy your home”.

 

5.       Google Maps – Total value here! Get listed on Google Maps! One of you lives in Santa Monica and the other lives in Montrose – BAM! Two address right from the get go that can be optimized for “Interior Designers Montrose” or “Interior Designers Santa Monica” the open a Postal Box in Los Angeles and optimize that listing for “Interior Designers Los Angeles”

The truth is with a little basic knowledge and taking the internet serious not just the internet, the Local Internet. You will be on a healthy way to a successful local business. Oh and by the way you should also join the waiting list for the Local Search Engine Blueprint. Your going to need it, if you want to dominate Google Local!

Oh and one more thing, if you can’t figure all this out, try hiring a business coach. I know a really good one and her name is Tammy Burnell a Los Angeles Business Coach. She is really good, but I don’t think you can afford her.

While the say “5 Simple Steps to Selecting Your Keywords” and he completely layout the formula for selecting keywords, many who even read this won’t do it correctly or take the extra time to focus on what is really important. Clients always tell me, “my keywords are Sugar Coated Blackbirds” (just made that up – the sugar coated blackbirds part that is) – Then I do a little research and what do you know, nobody is looking! And if nobody is looking for your keywords, then why would you want to pay me to optimize your site for keywords that nobody is looking for! Okay, take me out of the loop, why would you want to spend all the energy and time getting yourself ranked for a keyword that nobody is searching for. The answer, are you ready… YOU WOULDN’T!  SO DON’T DO IT!

The first thing I do when meeting with a client, is check if anybody is even search for keywords. Now you can do this without sophisticated keyword tools, just by checking Google’s very own Keyword Tool.

With Google’s Keyword Tool you can check:

  • Global Monthly Searches
  • Local Monthly Searches
  • Competition – by the way is based on Google Adwords

Not only check the keywords, but get keyword ideas. Imagine that new ideas! So let’s say you just can’t find your keywords, may your having a brain fart. Well then, find out who your competition is and simply put their website url and search. Google will return a list of keywords of what they think your competition is about. By the way this is a great tool when a client asks you to review there site! Hint, hint, see what Google is thinking about a site while on the go.

Let’s say you already have a website or are trying to optimize your blog, but haven’t invested much time in search engine optimization (SEO), or the efforts that you have made aren’t paying off. What’s next? Where do you even start?

SEO can be overwhelming if you look at it as an insurmountable project, but if you just take it a step at a time and start small, working your way up over time, the work can be easily achievable – even for a small team.

It’s natural for a company to think that they have the best insight as to what their relevant, target keywords are, but in reality, the way people search for a keyword may not match up with how you would expect your product or service to be found. This is why it’s important to do a sanity check, see what the data says and conduct thorough keyword research from the start, so you don’t waste cycles focusing on and optimizing for keywords that people aren’t actually using to find your business online.

Here are five simple steps to selecting your keywords.

1. Own Your Brand Terms

The first thing you want to be sure you rank for is your brand name. As a first step, search for your brand name and see where you rank.

If you don’t rank for your brand name, this is the first thing to go after. In most cases, this is a very easy step; you’re probably already there. If you have competitors ranking on Page 1 for your brand, you want to force them out and own this space (the search engine algorithms are now allowing a brand to own the full first page of results).

In addition to your brand name, make sure you own all terms associated with your brand name, like your brand-specific product names, as well as your management team’s names.

2. Get Keyword Suggestions

Add your URL, relevant keywords and competitors’ URLs to a keyword suggestion tool and get a list of recommended keywords. When adding keywords relevant to your brand to the suggestion tool, make sure to include a range of head terms, mid-terms and long-tail keywords.

  • Head terms = >1,000 monthly searches
  • Mid-terms = 100-1,000 monthly searches
  • Long-tail keywords =

Get Keyword Suggestions

3. Beat Your Competitors

Identify your competitors’ target keywords by adding their homepage URL to your keyword suggestion tool. Validate your own keyword list against your competitors. Are there any major keywords that you missed?

4. Narrow Down Your Keyword List

Compare your resulting keyword list by relevancy, competition, search volume and current status. The goal is to ultimately pick 10 keywords per SEO campaign – your brand name and four additional keywords.

Start by narrowing your keyword list to only the relevant ones. Check to see which keywords you’re already ranking for. It will be easier to start where you’re already in the running.

Look at global monthly searches and competition; ideally, you’re looking for low competition and up to 1,000 monthly searches. Think about conversion. Try to imagine people searching on these terms, seeing your site and whether they would actually convert.

5. Build a Plan to Rank for These Target Keywords

Take these top target keywords and build an SEO campaign around them. Monitor the keywords over time by tracking the trends of ranks and by measuring what kind of traffic you’re getting from them.
